Updating a published book
Early April I wrote a blog about updating the past Here. Well, I’m halfway through retyping the book and I’ve run into an interesting problem. Link, my male main character, is a man who would buy and drive a flashy, expensive car. In the original version of CHASE THE DREAM, he drives a Jaguar. I still want him driving a Jaguar, but the Jaguars of today are not the same as the ones being produced in 1989. (My female MC also drove a Geo, which is no longer being produced, but I easily found a new car for her to drive.) For the last two days, I’ve been spending a lot of time researching cars.
Yesterday I thought I had cars for my two MCs that would fit their personalities and finances, but then I called a friend who owns a Tesla. Talking to her was great, but she eliminated the car I thought I was going to use for Link. The Jaguar he probably would buy nowadays would eliminate two major scenes in the book. So, back to the drawing board. (better known as Google.)
Jaguar’s top models are EVs. No gas pedal. Now it’s an accelerator. Brake? My friend said she rarely steps on the Tesla’s brake. Taking her foot off the accelerator will quickly slow the car to a stop. Brake lines? Are there any? Even the ‘dash” is different nowadays from what cars had in the 1990s.
I hate it when I read something in a book that I know is wrong. Maybe a lot of readers don’t own Jaguars, but I don’t want to get even one review that points out errors I’ve made. And with AI becoming more and more prevalent in our lives, it’s easy to check if something is true.
Mistakes do happen, and I may end up with something that’s not right, but I’m going to check and double check before I republish this book, and I hope I get everything right.
